Bruce Reynolds is second from right. He was one of the architects of the 1963 UK Great Train Robbery, where a Royal Mail train was robbed of some sixty million dollars in today’s dollars by a gang of 15 men. He spent 5 years on the run before being caught and sentenced to 25 years. He was released in 1978, and died in 2013. This photo was taken when Reynolds was on vacation with his girlfriend (on his left) in the South of France, 1956.

In August, 1968, as the Democratic Convention assembled in Chicago, groups opposed to the war in Vietnam converged on the city. Their aim was to put pressure on the Democratic Party to seek an end to the war. They were to hold public demonstrations in order, but they were beaten down by what became known as a “Police Riot”.

Mayor Daley’s Freudian malaprop, “the police are not there to create disorder. They are there to preserve disorder” was seized upon by the brilliant duo Jerry Rubin and Abby Hoffman as the theme of this hellzappopin’ anarchic commercial for the Youth International Party.
